Facebook Bill Collectors...WTF?

You might want to think twice about accepting a friend request from a person you don’t know. Unscrupulous bill collectors have gotten sneaky and have started to request individuals as friends on Facebook, only to harass them about a debt that they may or may not owe. Just don't expect them to be as obvious as in the image above. Normally, they will be disguised as a very attractive woman if you're a male or a handsome man if you're a female. Sneaky, right?

Recent incidents have found them befriending individuals for the sole purpose of contacting all their friends and telling them about your personal business matters in an attempt to embarrass you into paying a debt! Needless to say, this practice is illegal but when you’re dealing with “scum” you can’t expect them to play by the rules. Bill collectors will do as much as you let them get away with because they count on you not knowing your rights.

So, remember…DO NOT accept any friend requests from people you don’t know because if you do, it just may turn into the biggest nightmare of your life!

Damn you, Bill Collector!

Do you find yourself cringing whenever the phone rings, thinking that it might be another bill collector so you let all your calls go straight to voicemail? You’re not alone. The reality is that in the current economy there are more people with bad credit than good. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. People lose jobs, can’t pay their bills and credit goes to hell in a hand basket...Or maybe you just didn’t pay. I don't really care. I’m not here to judge. I’ve been down that road before. Hell, I’m still on it, but it hasn’t stopped me from getting new credit.

The reason is that new “good” credit outweighs old “bad” credit. This means that the older your derogatory credit is, the less it affects your credit score. I’ve made plenty of mistakes in the past but the credit system is very forgiving as long as you make all future payments on time. Credit Bureaus know that peoples situations change over time, that’s why they put more emphasis on how you handle your credit today…in the here and now.

Despite having a history of bad credit, there are still a few places that will approve you. Trust me, if I was able to open 4 new accounts with my past credit history, ANYONE can!!! You just need to know where to go. I will be reviewing each of these second chance creditors in the upcoming months but until then, if you’re ready to start rebuilding your credit right away, send me a "private" message with your request and I will respond with a company that boasts a 90% credit approval rate for people in need of a second chance.

**As a general rule, anyone with a current credit score in the 500 - 600 range (Poor) can expect an increase of about 120 points after just 12 months of consistent on time payments regardless of your credit history. Combine this with a reputable credit repair company and anyone can have a 700+ credit score in 2 years!!!

Credit Karma - Free Credit Monitoring

Credit Karma offers one of the few truly free credit monitoring services in America. Their services are limited to TransUnion credit scores and monitoring alerts only. If you want to view data and receive monitoring alerts from Equifax and Experian, you'll have to pay a monthly premium for triple credit bureau monitoring with another company.

My personal experience with Credit Karma has been mostly positive. They notify me instantly whenever there's a change to my TransUnion credit report. I am notified of both negative and positive changes to my credit score and overall profile. The site offers great tips and suggestions on things you can do to improve your credit status. They utilize a "credit report card" with grades ranging from "A" through "F" covering categories of Open Credit Utilization, Payments Made On-Time, Avg. Age of Open Credit Lines, Total Accounts, Hard Credit Inquiries and Derogatory Marks. This credit checklist lets you know at a glance what areas of your credit profile needs improvement.

I found the information at Credit Karma to be very useful. The only negatives would be that they provide credit data for only one of the three major credit bureaus. The other issue is that the site is very cluttered and a bit too busy for my liking, but hey, it's free and the more you use the site the easier it is to block out the unnecessary clutter and go right to the data that's most important to you. For a free site and the amount of useful information that's available to you, I'd give Credit Karma an overall grade of "B" and that's saying something!

Fill your gas tank for $1

How many times have you been low on gas and low on cash with payday a week away? You need gas to get to work but you still have to eat...What do you do? What if I told you that you could fill up with a full tank of gas and it would only cost you $1 upfront? Would you be interested in this little known secret? Of course you would, so listen closely!

Let's say your gas tank is on fumes and you have $25 to your name on your debit card with a week to go until payday. You still need cash for the week but you don't want to borrow money from a friend or family member because you like to stay independent. Here's what you do. Draw $20 out of the ATM for lunch or whatever. Next, you go to a gas station with just a couple bucks available on your debit card after any fees associated with the $20 withdrawal.

Now you simply swipe your debit card at the pump but choose "CREDIT" instead of debit and you can now fill your gas tank with as little as $1 available on your debit card. Now, obviously you're going to have to pay for this gas on your next direct deposit along with an overdraft fee from your bank so make sure you're on empty when you do this and be sure to max pump since you will be charged the full overdraft fee whether you get a half a tank or fill it up.

I won't get into the dynamics of why this works...I'm just telling you that it does. When it's all said and done you get a full tank of gas for as little as $1 upfront and the only downside is that you'll have to pay your banks overdraft fee. It's basically a fancy cash advance.

And lastly, this is not illegal and it is not a scam. It's a loophole and that's all it is. Use it sparingly and you will limit bank overdraft fees.

Note: I have only tried this with direct deposit associated with my debit card. I have not tested this with a debit card that was not tied to direct deposit.

100% Free Credit Scores

If you did a Google search for free credit scores, your search would net a ton of results. Sure, the offers may sound great but just be aware that "some" of them will ask for your credit card information. The reports are free, but in order to get them you'll be required to sign up for monthly credit monitoring!

They'll tell you that it's just a trial and as long as you cancel before the trial ends, your credit card will not be charged. What they're banking on is that you won't remember to cancel the trial...and most people don't. It could take months before you even notice that you're being charged.

My advice is to compare offers and read the fine print the next time you are looking for free annual credit reports and if the condition is that you sign up for a trial, just remember to cancel in advance so that you don't get charged!
